Plympton History Week

Join Age of Chivalry as we honour Plympton and Plymouth’s Medieval History Tales of the Black Prince.  Talk to the Prince, his Knights and Ladies about their preparing for Prince Edward’s campaigns in France from Plympton Priory. Hart of Plymouth

A performance lecture about Plymouth-born Solomon Hart who became the first Jewish member of the Royal Academy of Arts with a giant painting that hung in the old Plymouth Municipal Building – a painting that hasn’t been seen for over 100 years. Performed by Derek Frood. 

Murder, Mystery, Mayhem Exhibition
12.30pm-3.30pm

An exhibition telling the stories of the some of the residents of the cemetery who met grisly ends.

Stories included the death of a sea captain at the hands of his crew, the murder of a young girl by her jealous boyfriend, the execution of a soldier by the IRA, policemen who died in the course of carrying out their duty, a whole family who perished in a horrific fire and the poisoning of a young woman through the ingestion of strychnine. 

Behind The Scenes Tours

Join The Box’s Senior Archivist for a 45-minute behind the scenes tour as part of the 2022 Plymouth History Festival. Learn how we manage, maintain and move our collections across our site and discover more about why we decided to bring some of Plymouth’s most historically important archives together under one roof. Please note that some of our spaces behind-the-scenes feature stairs and enclosed spaces. Advance booking is essential via The Box’s website

Devonport High School for Boys History Walk

Rarely open to the public is the grounds of the Old Military Hospital of Devonport which is now serving as Devonport High School for Boys. It’s a golden opportunity to learn about the past history of the area, from the early days of the hospital through to becoming a school. On this ‘Sunday School Saunter’ will be set a small exhibition relating to the school’s history. Please make your booking early to ensure your place via rockettfish@yahoo.co.uk

Join members of the Heritage Team for a guided walk of the cemetery and as they share some of the less savoury stories that volunteers have uncovered whilst researching the lives of those buried in Ford Park!
