Drake’s Island

Welcome to Day 6 of this year’s online History Festival! Today we’ll be looking at a variety of Plymouth landmarks, starting with a look at Drake’s Island. First, here’s a clip from episode 3 of the BBC’s ‘Secret Britain’, which includes a peek at the island as it looks today.

Taking a step back to the 1960s, this Westward TV film report by John Doyle shows a group enjoying a range of activities on the island, and highlights the importance of a special activity holiday for children with learning difficulties.

We’ll be sharing some great photos from The Box’s archive over the course of this morning via our Twitter and Facebook accounts. Do you have any memories of your own activities on Drake’s Island? Tag us on social media and we’ll share your memories throughout the day.
